The Bug House

Composer & Lyricist: Jerry A. Ranger
Book: In Development

A Tale of Transformation

In 1884, Mortimer Cook christened a town in Northern Washington State, "BUG," due to its mosquito-infested surroundings. However, the town's name was swiftly altered to "Sedro Woolley." In 1910, the state inaugurated the Northern State Hospital, initially deemed a haven for the 'harmless insane,' cementing its nickname among locals as the "Bug House."

The Hospital's Puzzling Mystery

Over the last three months, a perplexing phenomenon has gripped the hospital: inmates have been inexplicably vanishing, with five disappearing without a trace. Authorities are baffled by the mystery surrounding their escape or fate, as not a single clue has emerged.

Detective Poltergeister's Infiltration

With State Officials and local law enforcement seeking answers, the scene is set for the arrival of Detective Devlin Poltergeister. Despite his clumsy demeanor, Detective Poltergeister's unconventional methods have proven strangely effective in the past. Assigned the undercover guise of an insane inmate, he delves into the heart of the institution to uncover the truth from within.

A Journey to the 1960s and '70s

Transport yourself back to the late 1960s and early '70s within the walls of this captivating show set in a hospital of the era. Witness the integration of cutting-edge technology, as the main and side gates of the hospital grounds are secured by state-of-the-art magnetic electronic locking mechanisms.

Who-Dini's Theory

Meet Who-dini, the inmate who believes he's the true Houdini. In his mind, he holds the key to the mysterious disappearances. Aware of a peculiar connection, Who-dini theorizes that during electric shock treatments, the magnetic mechanism momentarily disengages the gate locks, offering a window of opportunity for escape. Could Who-dini's antics truly be behind the vanishing? Only time will tell.

Eccentric Characters of the Bug House

Embark on a journey through the zany corridors of the Bug House, where an eclectic cast of characters adds color to the tale. Meet Peter Bilecki, affectionately known as the Stumphouse Man, whose residence in a hollowed-out stump near the hospital grounds adds to his mystique as the groundskeeper. Joining him is Cornelius Klinken, the enigmatic Head Warden, and Cleta Kettle, the nutritionist and culinary mastermind behind the hospital's meals.

Bug House's Unique Inhabitants

Not to be overlooked is Thelonius Fitt, the staff fitness enthusiast with a striking resemblance to Richard Simmons, and Gary Goodkind, the pioneering psychologist credited with the creation of the first frontal lobotomy surgery. Amidst this backdrop, mingle with the delightfully unconventional inmates and patients, ensuring a riotous exploration of the Bug House's peculiar world.

The Tale of Garden Grove Friends

In the vibrant landscape of 1950s Garden Grove, California, nine youngsters came of age in a middle-class neighborhood. As adolescence beckoned, five of them banded together to form a garage band, dipping their toes into the world of employment with moderate success. However, as high school drew to a close, the paths of these friends diverged, with only two remaining steadfast companions into adulthood.

Lifelong Bonds

David Wilson pursued a career in law, carving out a niche for himself as a successful attorney, while Jerry Thomas dedicated himself to healing as a local physician. Despite the passage of time and the ebb and flow of life, their enduring friendship serves as a poignant reminder of the bonds forged in youth.

Reflecting on the Past

As Dave approaches middle age and contemplates retirement, he finds himself reminiscing about his childhood and pondering his future. Inspired by nostalgia, Dave makes the decision to reach out to his old neighborhood crew—a group consisting of seven men and twin sisters. With a desire to reconnect and catch up on each other's lives, Dave extends invitations to a neighborhood retirement and reunion party. The gathering offers an opportunity for old friends to share stories, reminisce about the past, and discuss their plans for retirement.

A Tale Inspired by "The Big Chill"

Loosely inspired by the film "The Big Chill," this story revolves around the reunion of the 'old gang,' as they come together to reignite past friendships and reminisce about their lives. Among the original nine members, Dave and Jerome stand out, with Jerome being Dave's lifelong best friend and the only black kid from the neighborhood. Tragically, one member passed away in Vietnam, while another, Bob, disappeared after high school graduation.

The Remaining Friends

The remaining friends include Chuck, a supermarket baker; Kenny, a highly successful special effects designer and artist; Tom, a retired homicide detective; and Lucy, a schoolteacher residing in Phoenix.

Revelry and Surprises

Joining the mix are Dave's wife, Kathy; Jerome's wife, Jolene; and Chuck's wife, Polly, who brings an unexpected twist to the festivities. As the party unfolds, hilarity ensues as the group navigates the challenges of their fifties, from menopause and midlife crises to forgetfulness and aches and pains. Amidst the laughter and camaraderie, the humorous mishaps of aging become delightful entertainment, adding a touch of whimsy to the celebration.

Reviving Musical Bonds

Dave has invited the original band members to bring their instruments, offering a nostalgic opportunity to revisit their musical roots at the party. Among them, Kenny and Lucy share a special connection as the only female member of the old band. In high school, they were sweethearts until Kenny's family relocated to Chicago, leading them to marry other partners. Now, reunited at the party, they seize the chance to reignite and rejuvenate their relationship.
